Hello all DG fans. I am sad to announce that this blog will soon be closed and removed from the web. After almost four amazing years, Drawl Graphic is undergoing it's final restructure. Drawl Graphic will soon be joining Paper Bicycle as a brand where it's main focus will be providing print and pattern, product and surface design.

For cool stuff about me, I will be switching over to Monsters-and-Stuff full time.

Viva Mole: Front...

So I finally got around to finishing the front of my Mole after my slight deadline blunder. Check it out...

I didn't like working with the actual die very much. The arms were especially difficult. My original sketch had more appropriately shaped arms. Oh well.

Monster Time Update...

I haven't posted anything on this in a while but I thought I would drop a little update. I finished the inking in illustrator and began some of the coloring. I stopped and decided to go back and redo some of the line work. My main concern is that the blue monster is supposed to be furry and I don't think he looks furry enough. Also that 3-eyed dude just looks goofy. A redesign is necessary. That kid looks kind of fat too. This one is taking me a while.

Here ya go folks. Round two or as I say "phase two" of my sketch process. This is a much tighter sketch as well as a much tighter concept. So with a few character development sketches, some tracing paper and a lot of erasing, I have a completed drawing. Next I'll jump into Photoshop and work with some color, then move onto the final ink and color phase. Right now though, I'm feeling the need to go eat some enchiladas! Later dudes.

I've had this image in my head for a really long time, (which is how I usually work) and one night while waiting for my girlfriend to get off work I scribbled this out in her sketchbook. I normally work in about three phases. This piece represents phase one where I messily slap out some graphic confusion that only I really know what it means. Unlike Chris, who does incredibly tight sketches, my sketches always tend to be totally incomprehensible. Something to work at I guess. Anyway, here is my sketch. I am currently working on phase two of this piece.

The Sweet Treat Jamboree Jug Band!!! Hooray!!!
For the upcoming Art of Design show presented by Density Studios Chris, Lindsay and myself all did this card design thingy. So here is my contribution.

Frankie Sparkle:
The "Leader of the group, so to speak, sings lead vocals and Banjo. He's been playing music since he was a little smokey. He gets the name sparkle from the glitter Bun jacket he wears. (The actual card has glitter on the bun)

Bruce "Cocoa" Mahony:
He loves nothing more than to kick back and whoot out a jammin' tune on his trusty Jug. He says the triple X stands for "kiss kiss kiss", and being made of chocolate, who could resist. (I can't)

Leroy the Fizz:
The "Mystery Man" of the group, Leroy plays Washtub Bass and that's about all we can get out of him. While Frankie and Bruce deal with the fans, Leroy hangs back with a smoke and comb. He's gotta keep his afroam lookin' good, after all.

Hey all, it's been a while. I've been busy doin' lots of crazy stuff. Well, maybe not so "crazy" and maybe not "lots". For example, here are some kids party invites I worked on recently. They don't have the cool "Let's Party!" text on them yet or the glitter and junk that goes on in production. I wasn't supposed to do that part.

Princess here is only a color study. The final color was finished by someone else due to time constraints.

Now that the BW book is finished up, I felt like crankin' out some new product stuff. First up is a new set of gift cards.

He's sweet, he's delicious and he has a song in his heart (because we all know at some point heart meat, from some animal, is thrown into the mix). This little fella comes with an envelope hand constructed from a real grocery bag. So scoop him up, take him home and share his joy with friends and family.

So I made a comment before about being the "lazy" one. Well, all us Drawlers are extremely busy most of the time. My real job is very demanding and I often don't get to certain projects until the weekends. Even then sometime, one must take a break and enjoy the company of others and life in general.

Went to the zoo...

Hey dudes,

A couple weeks ago I headed off the the MN zoo! Hooray! I took a real camera (non-digital) and pretended I knew how to use it for a day. It was awesome to get outside and observe the public. I got to watch some screaming kids, lazy critters and ended the day with a 3D underwater adventure at the IMAX. (Although it was cool to see it in 3D, I have been spoiled by Discovery's "Blue Planet" series.) Well it turns out I'm not such a bad photographer after all and here are a few of my favorite shots.

This guy had a great face. It was really cool because all the wolves were out. That's the first time I have seen them all! Then some little girl came in and was screaming/crying so hard she was choking herself.

This one was just hanging out. No big deal.

...no comment...

This was really kind of a moment. At first I didn't see the Gibbons and was all "Hey! Where are all the Gibbons?!" Then I saw these two. They were sitting there looking there seperate ways. Then the white one got up and started to walk away. But before it got very far it turned and patted the other one and grabbed it's hand. Then turned and walked away again. Cool.

Finally, I can't believe this one came out! Weird! Cool color in the photo too. On a side note a young mother and her very young daughter were standing by the tank. The mother very camly asked her daughter "Can you see the crab? That man is going to take a photo of it. Watch now." The girl watched very quietly with amazement. Then when I was done the woman lead her over to a fish sculpture and was explaining it to her. Man, I LOVE good parents!!!!

So I've been crazy-busy working on some stuff for Lindsay lately. I finally got a chance to work on my MUNNY this weekend. I am getting closer to completing and I've already got some sketches for the illustration done. It's gonna be fun to finish.....it.....hold.on.....DAMMIT! His porthole is off center!!! AAGGHHHHH!! NO!!! *Ahem* I mean, I think it was very clever how I have his face looking ever so slightly to the right. I'm so smart. (dammit)

So, if you ask Chris or Lindsay (or anyone else who knows me very well) they can tell you that I toil over my art until I feel it's perfect. So much so, that I often don't complete a lot of pieces. Well, if you have visited my gallery you have probably seen a version of this image. I have always felt uneasy with the type and the emptyness of it. So today I decided to complete it. Put it to bed. It's done. End of story. *whew* I feel better now.

Goopy....

...a little more progress. I stayed home from work today and was working on some imagery for our services page. We're working on loading up some imagery for that section. Anyway, after I was bored with that I popped in a movie and painted this guys "goop" face.
If anyone is curious, I am using a combination of Cell Vinyl, Acrylic Ink and Gesso. Then after it's dry I just buff it with a paper towel and the glossy finish in the acrylic comes out. If any one else has any different techniques I would love to hear 'em.

So my first screw up. I had to paint over the radiation symbol. After I painted it the first time, I realized it was horribly off center. This shot shows the final symbol. The body is almost done now. Just the shoes left. Then on to the head....

I laid down a couple coats of paint tonight so some progress pics are sure to be on the way. Hey. So here's the deal. I'm huge into Designer Toys! About a month ago I was checking out Kid Robot's latest stash and saw this tag for a "Do It Yourself MUNNY" contest. I got all excited and quickly shot over to the rules and guidelines page. Much to my dismay the contest was to end in about the same time it would take for me to order a MUNNY in the mail. Whoops! Missed that one. Anyway DG had just launched it's Feb. promo image on the site, a lovely ode to Valentine's Day. As we were contemplating our March theme I suggested to Chris and Lindsay that we all do a MUNNY and post our end results along with an inspirational piece of art. They agreed and here we are. Hello to all. Welcome to my "Drawl Graphic" sketchbook. Here I will discuss some of my thought processes and allow all you lovely folks out there a little sneak peek of upcoming projects.

Upon completion of my first t-shirt for DG I was excited to begin my next one. Here is a sneak peek, my initial sketch with a photoshop color study. Now unfortunately for the fellas out there who happen to love octopi, this one's only for the ladies. Don't sweat it though, a men only shirt is on the way.
